A brief History
The Miniature Railway was built in 1992, 5 years after the Heritage Centre was opened up by the Queen. It was decided because of the shape of the site, a balloon loop was unsuitbale to build like with other railways, so two section of lines where contructed along with three stations, first the Old Works to Forge End line, followed by the Forge End to Midge Bridge section and because we wanted all engines facing foward on every trip, three turntables where needed for the engine to turn around and run around its carriages.
Once the stations and line where built, a tunnel was contructed on the Old Works to Forge End section and can be seen today in its former glory.
The Stations
Crewe Old Works
Crewe Old Works is the main terminus station on railway, the station still retains its canopy that was built in 1994 and occupies the two platforms. The canopy for many years did not have a roof and was looking very shabby, but when the new volunteers in 2007 took over plans where on the way to restore it, so a good suppy of paint was bought and the canopy was given a full coat. Shortly after the painting was complete, plastic sheeting was bought for the roof and was laid piece by piece until complete.
